Life around the twelve-hour shift.

Shift bags, lunches that last, holidays you work and gifts that make the next shift easier.

One night shift, four small fixes

  1. Handover

A shift bag packed the night before: charger, spare socks, lip balm, a pen that works.

  2. First break

A cooler bag with an ice pack means lunch is ready when the break is, with no microwave queue.

  3. The long hour

Water bottle refilled, something salty, a two-minute walk away from the screens.

  4. Drive home

Sunglasses in the car, breakfast already made, phone on silent before you need it.

When the holiday lands on your shift

Somebody always works Christmas, Thanksgiving or New Year’s Eve. The celebration either comes to the break room or moves to the next day off, and both can work well.

  • Post the potluck sheet a week ahead so five people don’t bring rolls.
  • Pick dishes that need no reheating and keep the cold ones in the fridge until the break.
  • Move the family dinner to the first full day off and keep the clock out of it.
